Jehovah Rapha: The God Who Still Heals Today
Jehovah Rapha: The God Who Still Heals Today
“I am the LORD who heals you.”
—Exodus 15:26
One of the tricks of the devil is to deceive people and tell them that God’s healing power has been done away with. If you’re in need of healing, take heart—God is your Healer. One way this amazing truth is revealed is in His name Jehovah Rapha, which means “The Lord Who Heals.” First spoken to the Israelites in Exodus 15:26, His name isn’t just a historical title—it’s a present fact. God’s healing power is real—and available to you today. Understanding this truth can help you receive your healing.
Discover How God Reveals Himself Through His Names
Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself through several of His redemptive names—each one unveils a facet of His nature and character. The very name “Jehovah” (YHWH) means the eternal, self-existent One who reveals Himself. He is not distant or unknowable; He makes Himself known to us through His Word and by His Spirit.
The Bible includes many names of God. Here are some of His primary redemptive names:
Jehovah-Jireh – “The LORD Will Provide” (Genesis 22:14)
Jehovah-Rapha – “The LORD Who Heals” (Exodus 15:26)
Jehovah-Nissi – “The LORD Our Banner” (Exodus 17:15)
Jehovah-Shalom – “The LORD Our Peace” (Judges 6:24)
Jehovah-Raah (Rohi) – “The LORD Our Shepherd” (Psalm 23:1)
Jehovah-Tsidkenu – “The LORD Our Righteousness” (Jeremiah 23:6)
Jehovah-Shammah – “The LORD Is There” (Ezekiel 48:35)
One of the most powerful names God has revealed Himself through is Jehovah Rapha—“The LORD who heals you” (Exodus 15:26). Healing is not just something God does—it is who He is. He has revealed Himself as Jehovah Rapha, which means that healing is an essential part of His divine nature. And because God never changes, His nature hasn’t changed—He is still our Healer today. God is everything He has revealed Himself to be in His Word. None of His names in the Old Testament have faded away in the New. Instead, every one of them is fulfilled and revealed even more fully in Christ.
Explore What the Bible Says About Jehovah Rapha
To fully appreciate the significance of His name, Jehovah Rapha, we need to understand the context of Exodus 15:26. After the Israelites crossed the Red Sea, they found themselves in the desert without water (see Exodus 15:22-26). When they finally discovered water at Marah, it was bitter and undrinkable. In response to their cries, God instructed Moses to throw a piece of wood into the water, making it sweet and drinkable. It was here that God revealed, “I am the LORD who heals you” (Exodus 15:26).
The wood cast into the bitter waters at Marah is a type of the Cross of Christ. This miraculous changing of bitter water to sweet and drinkable water provided physical sustenance, and it’s here that He revealed, “I am the LORD who heals you.” This compassionate act of transforming the water gives us a picture of Calvary’s wooden Cross and our redemption, which includes healing for our physical bodies. The Cross of Christ transforms the bitterness of sin and sickness into the sweetness of salvation and healing.
The name Jehovah Rapha is rich with meaning and signifies God’s power to heal both the body and soul (your mind, will, and emotions). His complete provision for your healing displays His care for every aspect of your well-being. Whether you are dealing with physical ailments, emotional wounds, or anxiety, Jehovah Rapha is your source of healing and restoration.
Understand That God’s Nature Does Not Change
One of the most reassuring aspects of God’s character is His unchanging nature. Malachi 3:6 states, “For I am the LORD, I do not change.” Hebrews 13:8 reminds us that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” This means that the healing power of Jehovah Rapha is still available to you today. God’s covenant and promises have not changed, and His nature remains consistent with His redemptive name of Jehovah Rapha. He is still Jehovah Rapha, the God who heals today!
The New Testament is filled with examples of Jesus healing the sick, raising the dead, and casting out demons. These acts of healing and compassion were not just historical events—they were demonstrations of God’s healing power. Jesus’ ministry was a demonstration of Exodus 15:26, “I am the LORD who heals you.” And God’s healing power is available today to all who believe.
Get Inspired by This Personal Testimony
I remember vividly one incident regarding Jehovah Rapha healing one of our children when they were very young. Our family pediatrician told my wife and me that our child needed an operation. I asked if there were any other options. I remember inquiring, “Is there any chance this will just go away?” The doctor answered that this situation must be corrected by surgery. He said, “In twenty years of medical practice, I’ve never seen this just go away.”
My wife and I came into agreement and found a Scripture to stand on for our child’s healing and while laying our hands on him, we prayed the prayer of faith for his healing. Within a couple of weeks, this entire situation “just went away!” No surgery was necessary. Glory to God! We saw with our own eyes the beautiful work of Jehovah Rapha!
