Lesson 3: YOU CAN BE FREE FROM SICKNESS

Luke 13:10-16 (KJV)

“And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. 11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. 12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. 13 And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.

The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? 16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?”

·      “Ought” (Greek) = It is necessary

ARE YOU A CHILD OF ABRAHAM?

Galatians 3:7 (ESV)

Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham.”

Galatians 3:29 (ESV)

“And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.”

·      If you received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior (Romans 10:9-10), then you are a child of Abraham.

·      You are a child of Abraham and you have just as much right to divine healing as this woman in Luke 13.

Notice Jesus says three things about her healing (Luke 13:10-16).

·      Satan bound this woman.

·      She ought to be loosed.

·      She ought to be loosed because she is a daughter of Abraham.

You ought to be loosed!

·      If she ought to be loosed because she was a daughter of Abraham, you ought to be loosed because you are a child of Abraham.

JESUS REVEALS THE PURPOSE OF HIS COMING:

Luke 4:18-19 (KJV)

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”

·      Jesus came to loose people from sin, sickness, and all the power of the enemy.

Hebrews 13:8 (KJV)

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.”

Psalm 116:16 (ESV)

“O Lord, I am your servant; I am your servant, the son of your maidservant. You have loosed my bonds.”

SICKNESS IS THE WORK OF THE DEVIL

 Luke 13:16 (KJV)

“And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?”

·      Who is doing the binding?

·      Who is doing the loosing?

1 John 3:8 (KJV)

“He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”

·      What was the purpose of Jesus’ coming?

1 John 3:8 (AMPC)

“The reason the Son of God was made manifest (visible) was to undo (destroy, loosen, and dissolve) the works the devil [has done].”

Acts 10:38 (KJV)

“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.”

·      Satan is the oppressor (puts sickness on people).

·      Jesus is the deliverer (loses people from sickness).

·      Healing is good.

YOU ARE THE TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (KJV)

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

 2 Corinthians 6:14–16 (ESV)

“Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

·      What is Belial? Wickedness; wicked; destruction.

·      “Belial” - The name for Satan during the time between the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Psalm 41:8 (KJV)

“An evil disease, say they, cleaveth fast unto him: And now that he lieth he shall rise up no more.”

Psalm 41:8 (YLT)

“A thing of Belial is poured out on him, And because he lay down he riseth not again.”

·      Sickness is a thing of Belial (the devil).

2 Corinthians 6:15 (ESV)

“What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever?”

·      Sickness is from the devil.

·      God is not working with the devil to put sickness on us!

·      Only holy things should dwell in the temple of God.

·      Evil things should not dwell in our temple (body).

·      See yourself as a holy temple of God.

SICKNESS DOES NOT GLORIFY GOD

Luke 13:13 (KJV)

“And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.”

RESIST THE THINGS FROM THE DEVIL LIKE YOU RESIST THE DEVIL

1 Peter 5:8–9 (KJV)

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9 Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

·      Don’t embrace sickness. Resist it.

·      Sickness is a thing of Belial—from the devil.

WHAT WAS JESUS’ ATTITUDE TOWARD EVIL IN THE TEMPLE?

John 2:13–16 (NKJV)

“Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. 15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. 16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!”

·      You must take the same attitude that Jesus has toward evil in your temple.

·      Sickness is not a blessing, but a curse (see Deuteronomy 28:15-61).

YOU HAVE A RACE TO RUN!

·      You can run your race and finish your course with a healthy body!
